Posture Treatment in Helensvale
We’ve all heard the saying, “He has the weight of the world on his shoulders.” Sometimes, our posture can be a physical manifestation of our mental or emotional state, and there are patterns of posture that correspond with feelings of fear, anger, grief, illness and more.
But the biggest contributor to unhealthy posture is our sedentary lifestyles. In Western society, we spend hours of every day working on computers or looking at phones. We’re less active than ever, and we’re weaker than ever—especially in our abdominal and gluteal muscles, which we need to support proper posture.
Poor posture is the underlying cause of many conditions and issues related to altered biomechanics. At Family Health Professionals Helensvale, we have decades of experience helping patients find better health by addressing their posture.
Start Your Engines
The different muscle groups of your body have different roles. Your leg muscles are like the V8 engine in a Land Cruiser: they’re strong, and they can go all day. On the other hand, your arm muscles are like a sports car engine: they can generate more power than your leg muscles, but not for the same length of time. Finally, your core muscles (including your lower and upper abdominal muscles and your glutes) are like a cruise ship engine: they never operate at full power, but they can go for days and days without switching off.
Unfortunately, because of our sedentary lifestyle, most people do not know how to switch that core “engine” on.
At our practice, we see many active people who appear to be fit—they work out at the gym, do Pilates, run, cycle and train their muscles every day. But they don’t know how to engage their core muscles, and that postural weakness leads to many injuries and conditions.
How We May Help
When we see patients who have been injured or have pain for another reason, most want to know what stretches and exercises they can do to rehab the specific area involved. But the first homework our chiropractor, Dr Hennessy, gives them is to fix their posture.
This may include specific exercises for your abs and/or glutes, depending on your specific situation. We’ll show you how to engage them passively, such as when you’re sitting at your desk. More importantly, we’ll teach you how to keep them engaged while you’re walking, running or moving in any way.
Our exercise program to improve core strength and posture is designed to retrain and engage the posterior muscles of the body, decrease the usage of the anterior muscles, and build core and torso strength. Working on your posture is the best homework when it comes to accelerating the mechanical healing that chiropractic adjustments are promoting. Once your posture is corrected, we can address other specific areas of dysfunction as needed.
